I met Roger Nelson, Missy’s father, in an airplane with an open door. I was strapped to him and about to leap out the door when the plane reached 18,000 feet. Except that I couldn’t stop shaking, nearly crying because I was so scared.
Roger was a skilled skydiving instructor and genuinely kind man who calmed me down with incontrovertible facts – like, no one had ever died or even been seriously injured tandem jumping at Skydive Chicago and he trusted his technique so much that his daughter had made her first jump at age 5.

So back to the question. Is it – is terrorism evil? Or is it – what choices are left to the Davids when the world’s Goliaths wage (often political) wars that take the lives and homes of their mothers and fathers? How do you protect your way of life, defend your strongly held beliefs without the resources of government and armies? How do you protest if you are disenfranchised?
And, how do you keep fighting when the world labels your War, the only war you have the resources to fight, a vacant criminal action?

The political divide in America has shifted and it’s not so easy to spot your opponents anymore – unless, of course, you’re keeping track of attendance at the local parish. The religion gap seen in voting trends announces a new front in the culture wars. It has reshaped the leadership of the political parties and changed the wedge issues that divide us. If you think tax cuts and healthcare are what are propelling conservative voters to the polls, you haven’t looked carefully enough at the question of values.

Do you ever wonder where the good people at Knot Mag find the images for the articles? For example, is it possible that this one is a hearse? I have no idea.
Anyway, this is my very last article on Knot. It's my contribution to their Finding Home series and - like my short, but enjoyable stint at Knot - has its high points and low points. But, if you start to read it, please stick with it - there's some good stuff toward the end (that, I think, is a good rule of thumb for all things).
Best of all things to Jennie, Mary, Jim, Pete, Joe and the rest of the Knot community... you will be missed by lots of readers and writers like me.
