Ringing in the new year with Small Brown Bear

I adopted Bear in 1995 from a family who lived outside Athens. When I met him, he lived with at least 10 other dogs – the biggest of which licked all the other dog’s ears – and a slew of cats. I found him on a flyer for pets who needed new homes.

He's been with me every since. Traipsing around the college campus, moving to Chicago to play on the beach and walk the salty winter streets, and returning to Columbus years later. Through 13 homes, 3 cities, 5 boyfriends, and most of my grownup life, Bear has been there.

This has been a tough year for the old guy. This Fall, he was temporarily paralyzed. His back legs and his tail just didn't work. Lance and I rushed him to MedVets (the most expensive place on earth) and waited out 24 long hours to find out if he'd even survive. (That picture is him out in the walking area with his IV still in)

He has diagnosed with an FCB - something like a stroke on his spine. For weeks, I walked him with a strap around his belly to hold up his back half. And, slowly, he got stronger. (A certain miracle anti-inflammatory drug from Dr Riggs helped a lot).

Now Bear's back walking on his own again. A little more crooked than in his younger age and a little wobbly on the stairs, but still - he' back and all Bear.

Sitting in that parking lot outside MedVets, waiting for news, I never thought it would happen. But this is it. Time to ring in the new year with my constant companion - Small Brown Bear. Mazal tov, Bear!
